I am greatly interested in researching coral reefs and more specifically the bleaching phenomena that is becoming more prevalent. There are been several articles published regarding the recent discoveries of coral bleaching on the Flower Garden reefs. This specific occurrence is intriguing since most bleaching is a result of warmer waters and the Flower Garden corals are considered fairly deep water corals, peaking at about 60 feet. If this is indeed a result of warmer water temperatures that are that far down the water column, this would be a major environmental discovery. I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to participate in that discovery.
Coral reef microbiology is another interest of mine. I have worked in the environmental field as a bacteriologist monitoring water quality. I would like to expand my knowledge now with coral reefs. I am interested in studying microbial pathogens causing reef diseases. After just preliminary research into this topic, it is clear that there are several types of microbial infection that occur worldwide. An opportunity to perform research in this area would prove useful for working all over the world. Also, since some corals are affected because of weakened or stressed states, I would like to be able to link that to human interactions.
